Data Visualization

As part of a class project, we collected data on a certain aspect of our personal lives and then used that data to create a creative visual representation of the data.

Objectives:

  • Track personal data and successfully summarize it in a pleasing visual format.

  • Learn the differences between infographics and data visualizations and put those points into practice.

  • Also I wanted to get a good grade !

Initial Strategy

I decided to track my daily Instagram usage and how it takes up my time, including:

  • The amount of time spent on each browsing session

  • The number and type of posts interacted with

  • General content of each post

  • The interaction with the post - liked / comment / shared etc.

  • The user extended their limited instagram time

  • Was I supposed to be doing something else at the time?

To track this data, I used pen and paper to tally each time the post corresponds to each item. I also used data tracking software on my phone to ensure the data was as accurate as possible.

Data Collection

To collect the data, I recorded all the data points with pen and paper, then organized it into an Excel sheet which would be easier to work from during the design process.

Initial Sketching

I decided to focus on the content I saw while on Instagram and how I interacted with it. Therefore, that was the main focus of my initial sketches (top) and continuing on into revised sketches (bottom).

Digital Iterations

I selected three of the best concepts based on the feedback of my peers and began to build them out in Illustrator. Then from there, I revised them.

Peer Feedback

I was able to receive feedback from my peers on my two main concepts, which prompted me to revise my color schemes and font sizes.

Final Work

I selected the concept below as my final work based on the feedback of my peers, professor, and my personal opinion.
